Calaveras Poetry Workshop

Learn about the Mexican tradition of Calaveras poetry, then write your own. Calaveras poems are epistolary and designed to honor the memory and spirit of lost loved ones. Presenter Joy Levett encourages participants to explore imagery through writing prompts to produce two template-based poems. 

Tyvek tarps and colorful Sharpies will be available for twenty participants to share their poems in a community Dayton Metro Library ofrenda, which will be installed at the 2018 Dia de Muertos Celebration on October 21, 2018.

Angie Hoschouer of Woodland Cemetery shares tales of Dayton’s own bank robbers, counterfeiters, and murderers that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Please note that this program contains actual accounts of murders that took place in Dayton. Details may not be appropriate for all audiences. 

Who confessed on their deathbed of murdering pretty 18 year old Christine Kett? Did Rose Shafor really dress up as a man to help her lover commit a crime? Who killed Julius Kruse? And was the “Cincinnati Ripper” living in Dayton? These stories and more are told in this chilling presentation.
