Cafe Sci

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Main Library
The Eichelberger Forum, 1st Floor
Explore science in a relaxed atmosphere with friends and neighbors from the Miami Valley.  Increase your science savvy and join an open discussion following the topic introduction.

Dr. Ryan McEwan of the University of Dayton will share about "Rewilding Suburbia."

Suburbia in the United States is a huge and growing landscape that receives little attention from those interested in sustainability and the outdoors who often remain stuck with an old fashioned idea of nature being "pristine" and "out there" - the indelible mountains, hidden rainforests and sacred seas.  I believe that suburban landscapes are places with tremendous potential for ecological rejuvenation and rewilding that can both benefit the planet and transform perceptions of the natural world.  Rewilding Suburbia places the ability to "do something about biodiversity" into the hands of citizens and creates the possibility for shifting conversations and consciousness.  In this talk I will argue for my vision for Rewilding Suburbia and, through a series of case studies, show ways this is already happening around us, here in the Miami Valley.
