North to Alaska

Huber Heights
Meeting Room

North to Alaska: Cruising the Inside Passage - When naturalist John Muir first visited Glacier Bay in Alaska in 1879 he had no words to describe the beauty of the landscape that he saw.  The sheer magnificence of the snow covered mountains and gleaming icy glaciers that surrounded him helped John see that he truly was in a special place of sanctuary.

Tom Hissong, retired Education Manager for the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, had the opportunity of a lifetime to visit Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve on a cruise in Alaska’s spectacular Inside Passage.  Tom traveled and worked for two summers as Guest Alaskan Onboard Naturalist on Holland America’s MS Noordam cruise ship.  Starting at the Port of Vancouver Tom traveled north to Alaska through some of the most beautiful waterway passages in the world.  The cruise offered the opportunity to stop at several Alaskan ports including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Haines and Seward.  Tom observed and photographed a rich diversity of wildlife including Bald Eagles, Humpback and Killer Whales, Moose, Alaskan Brown Bear, Black Bear, Sea Otters, and more.  Join Tom when he shares his Alaskan experiences through a colorful PowerPoint presentation and his stories.

Tom Hissong has been an Interpretive Naturalist/Environmental Educator in Dayton area for nearly 41 years.  He retired from his position as Education Manager at the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm in 2017.  Previously he worked with Five Rivers MetroParks and the Dayton Museum of Natural History.  Tom graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. degree in Environmental Education/Field Biology in 1976.  He is well known throughout the Dayton area for his expertise in ornithology and bird watching, and for his enthusiasm in teaching classes on natural history topics to all ages.

The World of Native Plants and Birds

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Huber Heights
Meeting Room

Birds use native plants for food resources, nesting materials, nest placement, year-round habitats to live in and much, much more.  In turn, birds provide plants with a means to spread their seeds, protection from hungry caterpillars and insects, and other factors of ecological importance. The many interesting connections between plants and birds are strong and well developed.  Tom Hissong, Education Coordinator at the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, will present a colorful PowerPoint program on the fascinating relationships between native plants and birds and how often times one group could not exist without the other.  A special discussion will focus on the use of native plants to enhance our home landscapes for birds.
